Glacier는 하드디스크나 서버가 아니라, 거의 열어볼 일 없는 파일을 아주 싼값에 장기 보관해주는 관리형 아카이브 창고 서비스입니다. 이삿짐을 창고 회사에 맡기면 저장료는 싸지만 다시 꺼내려면 시간이 걸리는 것처럼, 저장 비용은 최저 수준이지만 필요할 때 즉시가 아니라 몇 분에서 몇 시간을 기다려야 꺼낼 수 있습니다.

S3 Glacier 계열은 거의 꺼내지 않는 데이터를 최저 비용으로 장기 보관합니다. 시험에서는 보관 기간과 "얼마나 빨리 꺼내야 하는가"를 대조해 세 등급 중 하나를 고르게 합니다.
동작 원리 / How it works
Glacier 계열은 S3의 스토리지 클래스로 통합되어 있어 같은 버킷 안에서 객체 단위로 적용됩니다. 저장 단가가 극도로 낮은 대가로 조회에 시간과 요금이 붙고, 최소 보관 기간이 걸립니다. Deep Archive는 표준 조회가 12시간 내외이며 최소 180일, Flexible Retrieval은 분~시간이며 최소 90일, Instant Retrieval은 밀리초지만 단가가 상대적으로 높습니다.
조회 요금과 최소 보관 기간이 함께 걸린다는 점이 중요합니다. 30일 뒤 지울 데이터를 Deep Archive에 넣으면 180일 분량이 청구되어 오히려 비쌉니다.
시험은 무엇을 보는가 / What the exam is testing
시험은 보관 기간과 조회 요구를 대조시킵니다. "7년간 규제 보관, 감사 시에만 조회"는 Deep Archive, "분기별로 몇 번 조회"는 Instant Retrieval, "1년 보관 후 삭제, 조회는 드물지만 몇 시간은 기다릴 수 있다"는 Flexible Retrieval입니다. 함정은 보관 기간이 짧은 경우입니다.

Glacier Instant Retrieval은 밀리초 조회(분기별 접근). Glacier Flexible Retrieval은 분~시간 단위(기존 Glacier). Glacier Deep Archive는 12시간 내외이며 가장 저렴해 7~10년 규제 보관용입니다.
Flexible Retrieval은 90일, Deep Archive는 180일의 최소 과금 기간이 있습니다. 그 전에 지우면 위약금이 붙으므로 "30일 후 삭제" 같은 조건에서는 Glacier가 오답입니다.
S3 Glacier Vault Lock 정책을 잠그면 관리자도 삭제할 수 없는 WORM 보관이 됩니다. SEC 17a-4 같은 규제 준수 문제의 정답입니다.
자주 틀리는 함정 / Common traps
보관 기간이 최소 과금 기간보다 짧은데 Glacier를 고르는 것 — 조기 삭제 위약금으로 총비용이 올라갑니다.
즉시 복원이 필요한 재해 복구 대상을 Deep Archive에 두는 것 — RTO가 12시간을 넘게 되어 요구를 위반합니다.

Glacier is not a hard drive or a server — it is a managed archival warehouse service that stores rarely opened files at the lowest possible cost. Like handing boxes to an off-site storage company, storage itself is cheap, but getting a box back is not instant — retrieval can take anywhere from minutes to hours depending on the tier.

동작 원리 / How it works
The Glacier tiers are S3 storage classes applied per object inside the same bucket. Extremely low storage price is paid for with retrieval time, retrieval fees, and a minimum storage duration. Deep Archive retrieves in roughly 12 hours with a 180-day minimum; Flexible Retrieval takes minutes to hours with a 90-day minimum; Instant Retrieval is milliseconds at a higher unit price.
The combination of retrieval fees and minimum duration matters: putting data you will delete after 30 days into Deep Archive bills 180 days and costs more, not less.
